Historically, Jews on the territory of Moldova have shared all major experience of European Jewry. For the last 400 years traditional Yiddishkeit – the culture of Ashkenazim - developed here. The Pale of Settlement in the Tsarist Russian Empire, the majority of the population living in small rural settlements - shtetls, the Yiddish language prevailing usage in everyday life became its characteristic features. Now one may count over 120 former shtetls in the country where old Jewish homes and whole streets, former synagogues and cemeteries survived.
