On October 20 the Kishinev welfare center “Hesed Yehuda”, in joint cooperation with the welfare organization «Acasă», conducted a “Volunteer Day”. That day became a real holiday both for the clients of “Hesed”, and for employees and volunteers as well. Three buses took 150 people out of the town to a place named Costeşti – the site of an ancient settlement of Tripoli culture in Moldova in a village of the same name. Now it is known as the fishing area of “Costeşti”, with surprisingly picturesque surroundings.
Preparation for the action started even in the buses. The participants were split into six teams and each team took a particular color. Then, the competitors were acquainted with the program and rules of the game. Immediately upon their arrival, people were entertained to snacks – tea and coffee with cakes. Competitors had to discover new fortitude in the face of the upcoming trials, which were prepared for them by employees of “Hesed Yehuda” and Jewish Family Services “NES”. While competitors had their snacks, employees of “Hesed”, “NES” and KJJC managed and equipped stations, at each of which teams had to fulfill certain tasks. Moving from one station to another, teams carried out their tasks.
On the station of “Amateur and Folk Art”, each team had to draw a poster, to devise a slogan of their team and a song for the presentation. On the next station – “Erudite” – participants answered trivia questions. On the station named “Crossword”, participants were asked to solve a crossword, the questions of which were based on the Torah and on Jewish history and traditions. Names of the next two stations – “The Garland” and “The Best Bonnet of the Season” – speak for themselves. All the teams gathered on the last station – “Sports”. Here, participants were not allocated accordingly to their age; clients of “Hesed” took part in the competition along with school children, and in no way yielded to them. After all the competitions and contests, tired participants and employees gathered in the hall, where tables with hot dinner and even wine had already been prepared for them.
After the presentations and performances of teams, entertainment program has started. Clients and employees “Hesed”, “NES”, and KJJC had dinner, after which everybody danced with great pleasure.
But everything comes to its end, and that nice day had finished, too. Competitions were over, the entertainment program was over as well – and everybody returned to the buses. Among those who participated in “Volunteer Day”, there was no one who did not agree that the holiday was a great success. What could be better than a day spent in fresh air and with such an interesting program! That is what gives explanation of the inscriptions on posters, made on one of the contests: “KJJC, We Love You!” and “We Are Happy in This House”.
